Jessa Sky Opens Up About Her Career, Her Sobriety, and Her Love of Music

Written by on March 14, 2025

Daybreak Star Radio’s RONN!E got the chance to sit down with singer/songwriter Jessa Sky for a wonderful and heartfelt interview covering her career, her sobriety, and what she has coming next.

Jessa Sky always had a love of music and writing, having used it as a safe space for herself growing up. However, though she dreamed of being a singer, she never thought she would have the chance.

As well as being a singer, Jessa is also a mental health advocate and openly talks about her sobriety journey on social media and uses her platform to spread awareness on both topics.

When she first pushed through her fear in 2018 and sang her fist and only karaoke song, Jessa broke through the fear and began moving towards her childhood dream. As her career moved forward and more doors opened for her, she knew that she was doing what she was meant to do.

Growing up mixed, Jessa faced discrimination and feeling out of place no matter where she went. It wasn’t until she got sober that she was able to start connecting to her Indigenous culture. She learned that other peoples opinions of how she learns her culture and traditions don’t matter, she loves to learn and take in her traditional knowledge in her way. Sharing her culture through her outfits has been one of her favorite ways of celebrating her ancestors.

Over the course of her career, Jessa’s songwriting process has evolved. She has always been a story forward songwriter, and she now makes sure she goes into the recording studio with a clear story in mind. She knows she needs to get the melody or the hook down first before she starts putting the words to it.

One of the things that makes Jessa so unique is her connection to her audience. Though her shows are growing in size, she still loves the smaller venues where she can take the time to talk to the audience and remind them that they are not alone in their struggles.

For Indigenous youth who want to get into music or any kind of art, Jessa advises you to not operate out of fear. Don’t care what other people think, they aren’t paying your bills, they aren’t you. Do what you love, and don’t ever give up on something that feeds your soul and your spirit. Do one thing a day that scares you, cause that’s where the growth happens.

Jessa’s new song Healin’ comes out March 21st, with two more singles coming out in the coming months before she drops her next EP sometime this summer. Her podcast Sky Talks is also coming out in April.
