From Conversation to Partnership

“And his first call (Peter Tomozawa, Seattle World Cup Ceo) called our chairman Bill (Sterud) and said ‘Great news, the World Cup is coming to Seattle!’” – Amy Mcfarland, Project Director

Amy McFarland, the project director for the Puyallup tribe’s sponsorship with the Fifa World Cup sits down with us and gives us an inside look. Firstly, Amy states that the Puyallup tribe has been a sponsor and partner with soccer organizations for many years, including the Seattle Sounders. Through that the Puyallup tribe has made many connections, including with the Seattle World Cup CEO, Peter Tomozawa.

Through this connection a light-hearted conversation brewed between the Puyallup tribe chairman, Bill Sterud and Peter. The conversation started with Bill mentioning that when the World Cup comes to Seattle, he wanted to be the first call. When the news was announced, Peter held his word and immediately called Bill, starting that collaboration early.

Amy McFarland goes on to state that this collaboration goes deep, being more than a sponsorship. Through their goals to trailblaze and innovate economically. More than sharing culture, they are aiming to build world-wide relationships throughout all avenues, something that’s never been done on this level.

Multifaceted Partnership

Starting with culture first because it never leaves us, the Puyallup tribe aims to share and inspire the entire world. Amy McFarland states that the Puyallup tribe will take part in majority of the events happening during the World Cup. Sharing music, dance, language, history, all aspects important to us Native peoples, although that is just the beginning.

The Puyallup tribe is an extremely accomplished community, from their successful chocolate company to prepping their own port, they are no strangers to innovative economic growth. Amy emphasizes the fact that this collaboration is meant to share their past, present and more importantly where they head into the future.

Not only that but planning innovative events that actively incorporate the community. Such as planning indigenous youth games with a potential Children’s World Cup, where culture can continuously be exchanged world-wide.

Never Forget Why You’re Here

Amy tells the importance of bringing awareness to issues that have plagued us for much too long. Such as Missing, Murdered, Indigenous Women, the conversation grows on how to bring that topic to light in order to gain support world-wide. Constantly emphasizing the past, present and future which Amy emphasizes multiple times throughout our interview.

Representing the entire Salish Sea is incredibly important to the Puyallup tribe. They plan to accomplish that through their traditional songs, and even special curated regalia to represent both their tribe and the World Cup. The collaboration is blossoming beautifully and we here at the Daybreak Star Radio can’t wait to see more.
