Daybreak Star Radio’s sports producer Jermaine Jackson sat down with college basketball star Destiny Reimers to discuss her rise on the courts and what she plans to do next.

Having grown up in a basketball family, Destiny fell in love with the sport very early on. Her parents and all her siblings played, and she would sit and watch as her father coached her sisters and absorbed the skills playing around on the sidelines. Every part of the sport appealed to her, from the competitive to the teamwork that it takes to be successful.

Destiny watched her family work hard all her life, from her grandparents, to her parents, to her siblings. She knew hard work was just a part of life. Boredom was not in her vocabulary, she was always doing something and moving herself forward.

Impressively, Destiny only lost six games during her entire High School basketball career, so when she joined her college team as a freshman, she knew she wanted to rework the program and start getting them more wins. But learning how to lose ended up being the hardest thing for her. Realizing that with losing comes learning and being able to grow and have patience with the process was an important step as she became Captain of the team.

One of the things that makes Destiny such a formidable appointment is her versatility. She is very coachable, having learned every position and trained herself to be able to fit in wherever she needs to in order to help the team.

As she has gotten older, Destiny has learned how to ask for help and lean on others for support. This has allowed her to play basketball while keeping a 4.0 GPA and create a business of her own.

Native Hoops was created to create an environment for young native kids to learn basketball while also involving their cultures and traditions. How basketball intertwines with culture and Indigenous peoples. Destiny loves to be able to give back to Indigenous communities and hopes to make the business a year-round creation once she has graduated from college.

For Indigenous youth looking to play sports in high school and beyond, Destiny advises you to not give up. There is a place for everyone. If you put the work in it will give back to you. There will be challenges, but make sure to remember your why’s, why do you want to play, while also making sure you take care of your body and mind.

Keep an eye on Destiny Reimer as she finishes out her college basketball career to see what she does next!
