Indigenous Jazz
Osiyo!
My name is Markus Dekanogisdi Teuton. I am a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and member of Echota-Tanasi Ceremonial Ground in Park Hill, Oklahoma. I am currently a student majoring in Jazz Studies and History at the University of Washington. Outside of school, I am actively involved in the Seattle music scene playing a wide variety of genres such as Jazz, Funk, Soul, and Rock. I can be seen playing at local Jazz clubs or composing, producing, and performing with the group, Joint Souls.
On the Daybreak Star Radio, I will soon be hosting a show known as Indigenous Jazz. It will feature a wide variety of recent and classic recordings from Indigenous Jazz artists. Through my music and work at the Daybreak Star Radio Network, I actively practice “Gadugi”, the Cherokee word for working together for the benefit of all. By practicing “Gadugi”, artists and communities can both grow and benefit as a whole.
Stay tuned for Indigenous Jazz!
Wado!
