“Don’t feel like you have to get it all done right now but don’t wait forever.” – Def-i

Hosted by Jermaine Jackson on the Daybreak Star Radio, we get an inside look at Def-i’s journey to hip-hop. Check out the full video interview down below‼️👇
4 Main Elements of Hip-Hop
Def-i’s love for hip-hop started with B-boying, in the 4 main elements of hip-hop. DJing, MCing, Breakdancing and Graffiti. Although in the time that he came up, the true way to breakthrough was by battle.
Def-i came up in a scene that forced you to carve out your voice or go home. From the settings of battle raps, breakdance battles and more, it put that grit on Def-i to keep going. What helped him even more was the area he grew up in and its bustling evolution of hip-hop.
Def-i shares that the southwest was blessed by its own inspiration and the transplants that brought something fresh. People out of the east coast and west coast brought their flavor which helped to kickstart the southwest’s sound.

Hip-Hop Starts with You
It always starts with a beat, that beat evokes a mood or energy, and that then evokes something from you. Def-i said it always starts with the beat from that point on, the energy it carries, passes the message onto him.
Def-i thanks the younger generation for their influence on hip-hop. Crediting them for never being afraid to try new things and keeping the culture moving. He states that passion for evolution is what inspires him and keeps things fresh for himself.
The one thing that Def-i counts as non-negotiable when it comes to yourself is your self-care. Stating that the only way to achieve your goals is to make sure that your spirit, mind and body are all accounted for and well-rested. He was given this advice by his grandparents and as he matures, the simple advice carries a strong message.

Hip-Hop is there for You
Def-i states to the youth that hip-hop is a safe environment that offers you a free invitation. An invitation to self-expression, an invitation towards self-love and more. He wants the youth to open that door, run through it with hope of a better culture.
He also states the importance of listening to your elders because they just want what’s best for you. More importantly to hold onto that self-belief, that you are capable and belong where you see yourself.
