Scott George & the Osage Singers performing live at the 96th Academy Awards! Historic!

In a historic first for the Oscars, Scott George and the Osage Tribal Singers are confirmed to perform live at the 96th Academy Awards this Sunday, March 10th, on ABC. Their performance of “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People),” nominated for Best Original Song, marks a significant moment as Scott George becomes the first member of the Osage Nation to receive an Academy Award nomination for his music. This nomination and performance underscore a landmark occasion, as it will be the first time a North American Indigenous music act is featured on the Oscars stage.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time, the 2024 Oscars will commence at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET, with pre-show festivities starting at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET. The song “Wahzhazhe” is featured in the closing scene of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a film that has brought significant attention to Indigenous stories and talent. Scott George, with over 40 years of singing experience, shares that “Wahzhazhe” is a powerful call to resilience and pride, reflecting the enduring spirit and history of the Osage Nation.

The 96th Academy Awards will also posthumously honor Robbie Robertson, the first Cayuga and Mohawk nominee for Best Original Score for his work in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Additionally, Lily Gladstone, of Piegan Blackfeet & Nez Perce heritage, becomes the first Native American actress nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the same film.

This year’s Oscars follow the precedent set in 2019 when Wes Studi, Cherokee, received an Honorary Award, becoming the first Native American Indigenous person to be honored in such a manner. The accolades for “Killers of the Flower Moon” highlight a growing recognition of Native American contributions to cinema and the arts.
